Hollidaysburg H. S.
Ron Helsel is a Duncansville, PA native and a 1988 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School. After graduating from Hollidaysburg, Ron played collegiate baseball for West Virginia University where he received a baseball scholarship. As a freshman, Ron made the starting pitching rotation for the Mountaineers. During his sophomore year, Ron experienced arm problems and had two elbow surgeries. Fortunately, he continued playing baseball as the starting right fielder and lead-off batter for the Mountaineers. For the 1992 and 1993 seasons, he was named Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference. He also was honored with the Most Valuable Player award his senior year. Ron received certification in Athletic Coaching from West Virginia University. Ron signed as a free agent with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1993 and played for the Dunedin Blue Jays in Dunedin, Florida. He also played 13 years in the Greater Altoona City Baseball League. He was Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach at Tyrone High School in 1994 and Head Junior Varsity Baseball Coach at Hollidaysburg High School in 1999. He currently coaches youth baseball in Hollidaysburg.
